This is a major new art space located in the former Ipswich Art School on High Street (move the cursor over the image of the atrium to see the outside of the building).
Ipswich Art School opened in 1859 at the Assembly Rooms in Northgate Street. It later was given a permanent home on the High Street when the new Museum was built in 1881. This move linked the Schools of Science and Art. As the School attracted more students, it also required more space. In 1934 construction began on this building with its distinctive glass-roofed, octagonal gallery. It was conceived as a place to inspire, transform and educate.
The building is currently being purchased by the Museum Service to be used to display art works.
